Have you ever had a day where everything seems to bother you? Someone asks a simple question and you get irritated. Your phone keeps going off, your to-do list keeps growing, and suddenly even the smallest thing feels like too much.
Then someone asks what is wrong and you honestly don’t know.
Sometimes there isn’t one big thing making us feel overwhelmed. Sometimes it is a bunch of little things that have slowly added up.
Stress Adds Up
Work, school, relationships, finances, parenting, lack of sleep, and everyday responsibilities all take up mental space. One thing may feel manageable, but when everything starts piling up, something small can be the thing that finally pushes us over the edge.
Maybe it really wasn’t about the dirty dish left on the counter. The dirty dish just happened when you were already at your limit.
Pay Attention To The Signs
Our bodies can sometimes recognize stress before we do. You may notice tense shoulders, headaches, trouble sleeping, feeling restless, or being more irritable than usual.
When you notice these signs, ask yourself, “What do I need right now?”
Maybe you need a break. Maybe you need to talk to someone. Maybe you need to say no to something. Sometimes simply recognizing that you are overwhelmed can help.
Focus on What Is in Front of You
When everything feels like too much, try making your world a little smaller.
What actually needs to happen today? What can wait? What are you worrying about that you cannot control right now?
Choose one thing and start there. You do not have to solve everything at once.
You Don’t Have to Wait Until Things Get Really Bad
Therapy is not only for when something is seriously wrong. It can also be a place to understand why you have been feeling overwhelmed, recognize patterns, learn healthier ways to manage stress, or simply have a space to talk.
Sometimes you know exactly what is bothering you. Other times, all you know is that you haven’t felt like yourself lately.
Either one is a good enough reason to start talking about it.
