Invest in Your Mental Health Without Spending Money

Invest in your mental health.

Often when we think about investing it is for the future, maybe your kid’s college, retirement, or for a rainy day. Investing in our mental health is much the same way, we are not only investing in ourselves but in our future. We are preparing for the transitions in life and processing what we can so that we can be present for those arounds us.

If you are like me the first thought that comes to mind is, I can’t afford it. The thought of one more bill may even increase your anxiety instead of helping. Someone may suggest treating yourself to a massage, pedicure or picking up an old hobby but all these cost money. In a world where everything seems to be getting more expensive and more stress inducing how do we invest in our mental health without increasing financial stress?

  • Check out your local library
    • Often libraries will offer free yoga or other activities that can help you to get moving and out of the house. Of course, if you enjoy reading it is also a great place to find a quiet moment to open a book. You can also utilize their electronic book system.
  • Take a walk and breathe in some fresh air
    • Do you have a dog? Share some quality time on the walk and you both get the exercise and attention you need.
    • Instead of meeting friends for coffee or a meal, meet up at your local park. It is more about connecting with your friends than the place anyway.
  • Take a shower (Use that soap you have been saving for a special occasion.)
    • It is easy to make our shower or bath just another thing we must do but you can also make it a time for healing. Take notice of the temperature, use scents you enjoy, play the music you like and soften the lighting. Make it more than just a time to get clean. Make it an experience.
  • Laugh
    • It seems so simple but often when we are bogged down by daily activities or stress inducing events we forget to laugh. Whether it is watching that favorite tv show or slowing down long enough to look at the crazy dance your kid is doing, find some laughter in your day.

These are just a few examples of how we can invest in our mental health without spending money. While these do not take the place of a good counselor, these simple ideas can help you to see outside of the financial stress you are experiencing to enjoy the simple things of life. Whether you have invested financially or not, take the time to slow down and freely invest in your mental health.
