EMDR

What is EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps your brain reprocess difficult memories so they no longer feel intense, or overwhelming. It also helps rewrite the program that can get stuck in our nervous system because of experiences we go through, even without our knowledge of it.

Instead of only talking through experiences, EMDR works directly with how memories are stored in the nervous system.

How EMDR Works

When something overwhelming happens, the brain may not fully process it. The memory becomes “frozen” and continues to affect how you feel, think, and respond.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound) to activate the brain’s natural healing processes.

This allows:

  • The memory to be reprocessed
  • Emotional intensity to decrease
  • New, healthier beliefs to form

Why EMDR is Effective

EMDR is widely researched and recognized as an effective treatment for trauma and related concerns.

It can help you:

  • Reduce the emotional charge of painful memories
  • Shift negative beliefs (e.g., “I’m not safe,” “I’m not enough”)
  • Feel more grounded and in control
  • Stop reliving the past in the present

Many clients experience meaningful progress more quickly than with traditional talk therapy alone.

What EMDR Can Help With

EMDR therapy is effective for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Childhood wounds and attachment trauma
  • Grief and loss
  • Phobias
  • Negative self-beliefs
  • Stressful or overwhelming life events
  • Sleep issues

Even experiences that don’t seem “big enough” to be trauma can still impact your nervous system and benefit from EMDR.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

EMDR is a structured process that moves at your pace.

You can expect:

  • A strong focus on safety and preparation
  • Learning grounding and regulation skills
  • Collaborative identification of target memories
  • Processing sessions using bilateral stimulation
  • Integration of new insights and beliefs

You are always in control of the process, and we move at a pace that feels safe and supportive for you.
